Between Volcanoes: Irazú, Turrialba and Guayabo Archaeological Site

So you already read about Irazú Volcano right? Let us show there’s a lot more to Cartago province than you’d have imagined

Put on some road tripping music and enjoy the views of our most relaxed experience

We start our adventure with a 1.5-hour drive to Irazú Volcano. As we traverse Cartago province, observe how the land is shaped by agricultural activities. The high mountains bring a unique climate and vegetation exclusive to the region.

Upon arrival, we’ll walk along the crater’s edge (currently dry due to inactivity) as your biologist guide shares fascinating information about its formation and historical eruptions. Here, we’ll identify characteristic páramo plants, hummingbirds, and fungi.

Next, we take a secondary route through Hacienda La Central’s farmlands, experiencing local life in one of Costa Rica’s most productive areas. Enjoy incredible views of Turrialba Volcano’s activity with a bit of luck.

Recharge with a delicious “Casado,” Costa Rica’s most traditional dish, at an authentic local restaurant.

Guayabo National Monument

Our final destination is the Guayabo National Monument, an ancient settlement and ceremonial site of Costa Rica’s pre-Columbian Cabécar people. Dating back to 1000 B.C. to 1400 A.D., this World Heritage Site remains a mystery with its ancient ruins. It’s also an excellent spot for wildlife observation, including monkeys, birds, and other mammals, guided by our nature expert.
